American Sign Language and Songs?!? - .6 CEU’s
This is an area that many an interpreter dread having to go and especially in religious settings.

In this workshop, we will explore some of the reasons why this is an area of challenge as well as some effective ways to transliterate as well as interpret and perform music idiomatically.

Using some of the presenters 23 years experience with song interpretation, participants will be given several applicable and usable tools they can use immediately as they work on several songs and hymns in this session.

7:00 pm -9:00 pm
Deaf Ministries: History of a Deaf Church and Interpreting Ministries - .2 CEU’s

Workshop participants will be introduced to the history of Deaf ministries, both the Deaf church and interpreted ministries. The ecumenical history of Deaf ministries discusses Deaf culture, Deaf fellowship, missionaries, and the establishment of interpreted ministries. Video snippets of Deaf ministries will also include historical figures such as Thomas Gallaudet and Andrew Foster., along with other pioneers from mainline denominations. A new appreciation for those who came before will inspire interpreters in their work as they too contribute to church history.

The workshop is two-fold: a didactic of Deaf ministry history and a history of interpreted ministries. With the professionalized vocation of interpreting, participants will learn and interact in the evolving profession of interpreters that will provide new insight and appreciation for their work.

Liturgical Frozen Texts in Christian Settings-  .6 CEU’s

Religious or church interpreting is one of the most challenging settings for interpreters.Though frequently minimized, the complex and varied nature of the religious setting requires the interpreter to be competent in navigating all styles of linguistic register. Many of the components of church or religious settings involve challenging language features such as frozen/archaic texts, figurative and metaphoric language, and the atypical expression of information through songs/hymns, prayers, sermons, and Scripture. Religious terminology is richly layered and often carries multiple meanings as well being habitually over generalized. Participants will discuss their individual religious lexicons and how differing denomination influence sign language choices. During this workshop, the participants will have the opportunity to conceptually interpret religious [This workshop is taught primarily from the Protestant perspective] terminology (i.e., light, grace, bless) into ASL and also how to interpret scriptural passages.

Understanding and Interpreting Buddhism

What is Buddhism? And how do I interpret it?...and how can it support my interpreting practice?
This multi-faceted workshop will serve as an introduction to Buddhist concepts and vocabulary with a focus on interpretation, as well as what skills meditation and Buddhism can bring to the interpreting practice. This interactive and experiential workshop will focus on culturally competent ASL interpretation for Buddhism and meditation as well as a historical look at "Buddhism", which represents a variety of religions and practices, some of which are over 2,500 years old.
Additionally, this workshop will explore how meditation can help the sign language interpreter develop the skills for a more sustainable and effective interpretation practice regardless of the setting. With an open and gentle approach, together we will explore the intersections of mindfulness and interpretation with interactive exercises, experiential practices, and small group work
